    Nelson Martinez

    The young Baritone Nelson Martinez debuts in Chicago after recently emigrating to the United States from Cuba. Born in Holguin, he graduated from the Instituto Superior de las Artes. In 1991 he became the leading baritone with the Teatro Lirico Rodrigo Prats in Holguin. After winning in 1994 the Fourth National Vocal Competition Rodrigo Prats, and in 1995. the International Ernesto Lecuona Competition, he joined the Teatro Lirico Nacional in Havana, where he performed such roles as Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, Marcelo in La Bohème, Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Tonio in Pagliacci, Figaro in Il Barbieri di Siviglia, Iago in Otello, and the title role in Don Giovanni. Known for his versatile musicality as much as for his robust and rich voice, Nelson Martínez has equally developed an extended repertoire promoting the great Ibero-American lyric genres. He has performed central roles in many Spanish and Cuban Zarzuelas, including El Cafetal, Cecilia Valdés, La del Manojo de Rosas, La Leyenda del Beso, La del Soto del Parral, and Luisa Fernanda. In the year 2000, Nelson Martinez had a memorable success if Mexico with his first musical theater role as Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha.

    He has appeared as a guest in France, Spain, Russia, North Korea and Portugal in the operas Lucia di Lammermoor and La Traviata. As a recitalist he has toured the United States with his mentor tenor Carlos Montané. He and his wife currently reside in Miami, Florida.
